Philanthropic Spotlight – La Jolla Music Society

Philanthropic Spotlight – La Jolla Music Society

Our friends at the La Jolla Music Society are making beautiful music and PBO Advisory Group is proud to help them! We are honored to serve as outsourced accounting, finance and human resources staff for LJMS and support their commitment to music and community.

Founded in 1941 as the Musical Arts Society, LJMS has a long history of expanding musical access to San Diego County. Today, with a mission (in part) “to enhance cultural life and engagement by presenting and producing a wide range of programming of the highest artistic quality,” LJMS recently finished its SummerFest and will soon be launching its Winter Season, which includes something for every music lover, performed by world-renown talent.

It was a referral from a banking colleague and another client that matched PBO Advisory to LJMS. The Society was in need of high-level financial services to help work through a difficult time.

PBO Advisory’s consulting chief financial officer Rick Dahlseid notes, “The PBO Advisory team has been able to build a bridge to new policies and procedures that has helped the Society improve its financial and human resources management.”

Acting as an outsourced CFO, Rick has spent a lot of time working onsite at LJMS’s offices within the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, affectionally known as “The Conrad,” and he calls it a “wonderful place to be.” The Conrad campus opened in 2019 in La Jolla and features four outstanding performance and activity spaces.

Rick’s enthusiasm extends far beyond the Society’s facilities. In addition to being a big fan of its performances, he also is in awe of LJMS’ education and community programing and especially the outreach programs for local students.

The Community Music Center teaches children in 4th grade and above how to play a musical instrument. Currently, classes are offered via Zoom and are bilingual. Each year, hundreds of students from throughout the county are invited to LJMS performances at no charge. The Society also sends artists into the community, including to school assemblies, to introduce thousands of San Diego children to classical music.

Rick cites LJMS as a great example of an organization that took on the challenges of COVID and won. By capitalizing on technology to shift from live to streaming performances, as well as in-person to Zoom classes, the Society’s team has been able to bring beautiful music to an even wider audience.

Whether you are a classical enthusiast, a jazz lover, a bluegrass fan or looking to expand your musical spectrum, La Jolla Music Society has something for you. We encourage you to check out their website, including the events section, to get information on all of the upcoming programs.
