Empowering Young Readers at the School Book Fair

At PBO Advisory Group, giving back is important to us and a key component of our values. We encourage our team to get involved in their communities and give them eight hours of paid time per year to do so.

Recently, Rachel Allen, one of our consulting HR managers, volunteered at her children’s school book fair and we invited her to tell us about it.

We spent a lot of time setting things up, including unpacking boxes of books and arranging them by reading level. Then when the classes came in, I walked around with a group of kids who had money to spend to help them learn how to shop within the budget they had. It was really interesting to see five- and six-year-olds determine what they really wanted to buy with the $25 (or so) their parents gave them. It was hard to explain that a book for $10 and $20 was going to be over the budget so I would show them options within their budget – a good life lesson for the kids. It was also difficult to explain the concept of tax to a kindergartener or first grader. I really wanted to just buy them what they wanted, if they didn’t have enough, but there were too many kids for me to do that!

Rachel’s kindness shines through in her desire to volunteer and help buy the kids what they want. PBO Advisory is proud to support her efforts to give back to her children’s school and its students.

Our team serves the community in many different ways, and we look forward to sharing more of their stories with you in the future.
